To all the people that wear Hearing Aids...

I was thinking I wish HEARING AIDS where like Cochlear Implants in a way because wit a CI you dont have earmolds you just put it behind your ear and "YOU CAN HEAR". Thats one of the reasons why I like them. My earmolds were expensive when I purchased my aids 4 months ago.I had to switch them a few times. They are constantly itchy im assuming its because of the ear molds. I dont have itchy ears when the aids are out. Its only when earmolds are in. I have no choice but to wear the aids because I have to hear whats going on. I tried different sets of earmolds but its getting costly. Ear molds arent covered and they are $200.00 NONREFUNDABLE!!! So how many pairs am I going to go through....

What do you think?? Dont you wish that hearing aids where like CI'S. I deafinitely do... but its too late to go that route maybe oneday something like that will be available for us.

If not then I'll consider the CI later on at this time I cant get it if I wanted to because of my illness. Thats why I ended up aids to avoid surgery. Luckily I can hear well with the aids. Its not 100%, but its something. I cant live without them at this point.

For the constant itchy ears I used DERM OTIC which must be perscribed by an ENT. I use it helps somewhat but not 50%.

Whats your opinion about this???

I had to change ear mold types as I was allergic to them. My reaction would be a build up of moisture in the ear canal and I don't remember if I had itchiness, or not.

The solution was to have an ear mold that was hard (not soft and pliable) and drill a small hole in it to help my ear 'breathe.'

Hmm that's interesting. About getting a hard ear mold, that I wouldn't like. I go through lots of q-tips as it is.

Is it the norm for insurance to NOT cover ear molds?

Only on occasion have I had issues with itchy molds and usually one I remove my hearing aid, itch it and put it back in I'm fine. I assume that it's no different than a hearing person who gets an itchy ear from time to time. However, if this is happening to you regularly you may want to check to see if it is an allergic reaction you're having to the material that the mold is made out of.

I have air vents in mine too. Otherwise I can't stand wearing em.

I'm pretty lucky these days in that the almost constant ear infections that I had for years finally stopped. It took a new pair of aids to finally stop it recurring.

These days my Starkeys are really comfortable. Pop em in and more or less forget they are there.

Hi, I found your blog through SpeakUp Librarian. I now have CIs but used to have the same problem with ear molds when I wore hearing aids. I don't know if you get colored ear molds, but I found that I was allergic to most of the dye they use in the ear molds, causing a lot of problems. There is a special type of ear mold called DisappEAR that is made to blend in with the ear (even has little ear veins- it's really cool!) that I found was actually much softer and more comfortable than normal ear molds. Also, ask your audiologist about skeleton molds. They allow for you to have an area for your ear to "breathe". However, only certains types of hearing losses can use them, so don't get them until you're certain you'll be able to use them!
